Free Space Optics

Free Space Optics is a line of sight (LOS) technology, which utilizes light to provide point to point wireless connections. The light source is usually some kind of laser diode, as this type of light is the most suitable to provide high speed, long distance connections. Low speed, short range systems (typically below 10Mb/s and under 200m), may use a high power LED.

FSO products can offer link speeds between 2Mb/s to 2.7Gb/s and within the next six to twelve months 10Gb/s product solutions will be on the market. Some products are able to offer data and voice channels over a common link. FSO products are ideally suited to the short-haul, high-speed market, supporting links 100Mb/s – 1Gb/s and up to a maximum clear line of sight path of 2km.
